Life can be Unpredictable

photo.jpg

It's funny how life really can be unpredictable.  I'm a planner, always have been and always will be.  It has it advantages and its disadvantages....I would like to be less of a planner and more of a go with the flow kind of person.  I'm learning!

A few of you knew that my mom was having surgery for colon cancer in January.....it was all planned and under control.  So many days in the hospital.  So many days at home recovering.  Life could easily go on as usual.  That worked for a little while.  Then her body was slow to respond afer surgery.  Then she had an infection.  Then she came home.  Then she was back in the hospital.  Then she was home again, but needing to make daily visits to the doctor for lab work and progress checks.  So a little unplanned and a little overwhelming for my dad, sister and I.  And the worrying....it seemed each day for a while there was something new to worry about.

But the good news is that she is at home, healing and doing just fine and they believe that all of the cancer was removed with the surgery.  In fact she is itching to get back to the sewing machine and I'm ready to make some projects for her to quilt.  It's only been three weeks, but it feels like three months.

I am ready to jump back in and check out the over 500 craft blog posts waiting for me .....

Show the progress of my Doll Quilt Swap .....

Show the progress of my Valentine Swap which will be going in the mail tomorrow .....

Catch up on any fabric swaps I owe .....

And last but not least, check in on my 3 x 6 Bee and see what everyone is making! .....

Life can be unpredicatable but it is still great!  Especially when my mom is going to heal and we can get back to quilting!  So thank you to all my friends for checking in on me and know that I had to take a break to handle the emotional roller coaster, but am back with an even better outlook on life.

January's Giveaway - Embroidery Fun!

Volkswagen Bug Embroidery

I'm having fun with some embroidery these days!  I always like to do embroidery in the winter for some reason.  My husband loves old cars...we have an El Camino, Porsche, VW Bug (those are just the cars that run)....plus others in certain stages of projects.  After 13 years I know a little more than I wanted to about makes, models, body styles, and what's cool!

I decided it was about time to actually use that knowledge so I'm making some embroidery patterns to sell on etsy.  Even Hubby thinks it is cool although I doubt he'll be gifting them to his car guys.

I've also been going through my supplies and organizing and I found a duplicate embroidery book so I'm giving it to you! It is such a great book I forgot I already owned it and bought it twice.  So leave a comment telling me iif you are cleaning out your closets this month too~

I'll pick a random winner on Monday the 18th~

Doll Quilt Swap 8

DQS8 Inspiration Mosaic

I am so excited to participate in yet another Doll Quilt Swap on flickr!  This is number 8 but for me it's only my second.  I like that it is a secret swap and we get to see sneak peaks without knowing what our little quilt will look like till it arrives.  I'm excited to find out who my partner is and in return I want to let my partner know that I want something they are inspired to make!

Knitted Christmas Ornament

Knitted Christmas Ornament

Isn't this ornament just the cutest?  I wish I could say I made it, but I cannot knit worth a darn.  I have tried three different times.  It is a goal in life to learn because I would love to be able to make ornaments like these.

My neighbor surprised me with this in her Christmas card.  She has knitted little booties each time the kids were born and I now use those as Christmas Ornaments also.

I LOVE HANDMADE!

Heather Ross Matryoshka Quilt

Heather Ross Matryoshka Quilt

I always like to see clean, crisp white colors after Christmas so this little quilt is perfect!

I made it a few days before Christmas with simple patchwork and hand embroidery as a gift for my niece. She loved it and so do I. Of course you can't go wrong with Heather Ross fabric, purple, green, and matryoshka dolls.  The embroidery pattern is from A Little Sweetness.  I have her Christmas pattern also, but didn't have a chance to make it yet.

We had lots of quilt gifting this year so the parade of quilts will be starting soon.

Shoo Fly Quilt Block

Started working on my shoo fly quilt. I'm turning the corners which would traditionally have the green corners facing out. I like the simpler more modern look that the quilt block changes to.

I changed the colors of my blog, a girlfriend made me some logos and after six months, I'm finally finding me. There is such wonderful inspiration and ideas out there in blog land that it is easy to lose yourself. I've finally defined me and it feels great.

I am yellow, green, blue with simple graphic clean lines!

This quilt will be my first of 2010 and it will be all me ... my favorite colors, a simple design, and easy to make.

I'm looking forward to the New Year!

Moments

A family friend has lost her battle with cancer and I will always remember her for encouraging me to sell my quilts in her local shop ten years ago. She made the best handmade soaps and lotions. I didn't sell a lot of quilts, but having someone believe in me was all that mattered.

Small acts of kindness, generosity, and encouragement really do make a difference in someone's life.

Monthly Craft Book Catch Up ~ January

Impressive!

I love craft books!  It seems like everytime I turn around there is a new one coming out.  The inspiration and ideas are always fabulous but they sit next to my bed for me to look through instead of in the craft room as a book to go to and find a project to make.

I've decided to try something new for 2010.  It'll be my New Year's Resolution!  At least the fun one.

I'm going to pick a different craft book from my library each month and make a project from it ~ start to finish (not necessarily by the end of the month if it's a longer project) ~  By the end of the year I will have 12 projects from 12 different craft books!

I'm also hoping that this will get me out of my sewing comfort zone and challenge me to try new sewing projects and not just quilts.

My first book is going to be One Yard Wonders by Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins.  I'm excited for this to be January's book because it has so many fabulous projects.

I'm toasting to new craft and sewing adventures in 2010!

If you would like to play along for any month then add your information on Mr. Linky and I'd love to see what book and project you have picked!

Now It's Christmas! ~ WINNER~

Having my daughter's birthday in December has taught me to be much more efficient than I have historically been. Shopping is done before Thanksgivng and the first half of December is devoted to preparing for her birthday and after that, the rest of December will be spent enjoying the holidays. Getting the tree, wrapping gifts, visiting friends and family, and making lots of goodies!

It seems awfully quiet in blog land so I would assume everyone else is enjoying the holidays also. I'm announcing December's winner then will be back by January 10th to announce January's Giveaway.

I have lots of crafting, cleaning and cupcake eating to get to! Enjoy your holidays and I look forward to lots of fun crafting adventures with you in the next year!

Before I say who the winner is I have to tell you that we opened Christmas gifts on Christmas morning but did always get a pair of pj's to open and wear on Christmas Eve! Of course I continue that tradition.

December's Winner is:

Anita who said:

When I was a kid we opened them on Christmas eve with my mom's side of the family. Now with my own family we open them on Christmas morning. Great question and happy holidays!

Quilted Fabric Ornament Tutorial

MUNKI MUNKI FLANNEL ORNAMENTS

Here are some instructions on how I made these quilted fabric ornaments.  I used ribbon hangers that you can find anywhere from Target to Crate and Barrel.  I like them because they are all the same size, come in lots of colors, and are ready to use.

I used a 5 inch circle for the fabric front and back.  3 inch circles for the 2 batting pieces.  And ribbon ornament hangers ~ but of course any ribbon will work just fine.

Place your ribbon in between the 2 layers of batting and stitch in place.

Center your batting with the ribbon on your backing fabric.  Place the top fabric to create the quilt sandwich and pin in place.

Stitch 1/4 in from the edge all around the circle starting and ending at the top.  Continue quilting in circles or any other manner of quilting would look nice.  I also made some hearts that have more random quilting.

The top is a perfect spot to embelish with bells, buttons, bows, felt.  You could rag cut the edges and fray them in the washer and dryer.  Some ric rak sewn around the outer edge would be cute.

I have a little one who puts everything in her mouth so I will embelish these at a later date since they are meant for the kids' Christmas tree.

The possibilities are endless....have fun and I'd love to see any you make!

Brrrrrrr.....

So it was 10 degrees when I went to work this morning. 10!!!!! That is just plain ridiculous for Washington State. It is supposed to be raining - which would mean it would be warmer. I mean, everyone knows it rains in Washington - you've all read Twilight, watched Frasier and Greys Anatomy. I guess there are worse things to be known for.

But really, I just want my rain back. We are not prepared for this weather - I haven't even purchased the snow clothes for the kids cause we don't head to the Mountains to play in the snow until after the first of the year. So I'm pulling out what cold weather items we have and layering on the polartec. Even the grocery store has put hats and gloves at the checkstands for people to grab.

The good thing is that we have plenty of quilts! I think every single one is in use = that's about 25 if you really want to know! Quilts on the beds, quilts over the windows, quilts on the wood floors ~ it is really quite a patchwork in our house. It's an old one so single pane windows and party unfinished basement makes it hard to heat at 10 or below.

So not a lot of productivity but there is lots of cuddling in quits and eating fabulous cupcakes made by one of my bestest friends ~ Jodi!

.......

But seriously ~ although I'm complaining about the cold, I cannot imagine being without a home that has heat and quilts to cuddle under with my kids. I have been lazy and have not shipped off my quilts to Give a Kid a Quilt which I am going to do today.....and I encourage everyone to donate a quilt to your local shelter or other organization.

We quilters really have no excuse not to take the time to quickly put together a small quilt with leftover fabrics or some charity organizations will even take quilt tops.  Consider making a difference in someone's life.

Crunchy Glazed Pecans

Or the best nuts you've ever eaten and can't stop eating until they are gone! Seriously....my girlfriend visited me the day after Thanksgiving and I had some of these crunchy glazed pecans left and now she's getting angrier by the day cause I haven't given her the recipe yet....we've been friends for 20 years so I'm not too worried - Hi Darc :)

The salad is Northwest Autumn Salad from the Cookbook Simply Classic by the Junior League of Seattle. It's a fabulous cookbook and one of my favorites.

There is also a recipe for Glazed Pecans from the cookbook that I have adapted to my liking, I don't add as much salt and include vanilla. So here it is.....

Glazed Pecans

2 pounds whole pecans
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup light corn syrup
2 Tbs water
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

1.  Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

2.  Combine all ingredients in large saucepan and bring to a boil.

3.  Add pecans and stir to completely cover nuts.

4.  Spread nuts on foil lined baking sheet.

5.  Bake for 1 - 1 1/2 hours, stirring every 10-15 minutes.

6.  Cool and lightly stir as pecans are cooling to break up any big chunks.

7.  Store in an airtight container.

These pecans are great on salads, sweet potatoes, baked goods, or just by themselves which is how we love to eat them.

They also make a quick gift to hand out to friends at Christmas. Enjoy!

Sew Mama Sew Winner!

I've been doing lots of behind the scenes activities! My daughter's second birthday is in a few days and we are having a gingerbread party....she will be 2 so I'm sure she'll be more interested in eating the candy than decorating.

I can't have a gingerbread party without a quilted gingerbread man and he is almost finished. Oh! and a gumdrop wreath....I still haven't figured out how to make it without stuffing my face with gum drops. The white ones are my favorite.

It has been fun to read all the comments and visit everyone's blogs who participated in the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway.

So per random.org.......the winner is #8 ~ Donna of Kindred Crafters!

~ Donna has a daughter who would love to have the baby doll sleeping bag ~

It is very easy to make and I will have some basic instructions to share in the next post if you need a quick gift to make before the holidays or at anytime.

In the meantime if you want a gingerbread man for your kids to color or for holiday crafting, you can download my rough drawing.

Happy Holidays and I hope to visit with many of you again!
